Re: [epilepsy] Re: just staying in

Drinking (while on medications for me) is advised against. However if the family is having alcohol and I actually wish to, I get the tallest glass, fill it entirely with ice and ask them to lighten the dose of mine up a bit so I don't dilute seizure medicines too much. My favorites are those flavored coolers, or mikes raspberry lemonade. I also usually have a cup of coffee near me and a bottle of water. But even if I don't and just have the drink filled with crushed ice, it usually takes the entire evening to enjoy the flavor and sip it down. That happens usually 3-4 times per year. Relaxing to a nice taste is fun and I have not had side affects.
However, if there is no ice, that is when I usually add coffee & water to drink with it as a second type of dilution. Because when I drank a bottle without any dilution, it did water down my keppra/klonopin combo seizure med and I did have seizures. So I go for the flavorfilled in a tall glass filled with ice chips or cubes. They both melt as I sip thru a straw and consider it a family bonding and spoiling me. Rarely do I completely finish one. Never have I finished 1 1/2.
I would do the same in public but I would have to have a severely valuable reason to drink and there would likely be sparkling cider (non-alcoholic) so I could enjoy the event without worry for my health or any affects. Even if the family has sparkling cider I choose that first.

Hi Tamara

I just read your previous message about Megan, it's really
good that she doesn't let her epilepsy take over her life,
it's so easy to let a condition like that restrict you but
what's the point, life's is far too short. I admire her for
her spirit of adventure.

Now I have a question for the list. I like a beer or two and
a long time ago I was told by my consultant at the hospital
that alcohol can bring on a seizure as quick as anything.
Now because it's my birthday today I have had a bottle of
beer today and one yesterday. How much beer can I safely
consume without it causing me any real problems, I suppose
this is like asking how long is a piece of string but this
is an interesting point. Does it depend on what type of
epilepsy we have, the medication etc? I was given a bottle
of spirits for my birthday but because it is 45 percent
proof I cannot touch it, I drink beer and I try and stay at
about 5 or 6 percent but is that too high? What do you guys
think?

Regards

Adrien
