[epilepsy] Adrian, re: drinking

Hey, Adrien. :)

Some can drink, and some can't. It depends on a lot of things, including how frequent your szs are, what type(s) you have, how much med you're on, if you're taking more than one (and what they are), and how much you drink.

I am not drinking now, due to another (unrelated) problem I have that forces me to adhere to a strict diet and abstain from alcohol, but when I did drink, it was ONE drink, over about 40-45 min, at least 12 hours after taking my med. I was also on a very low dose then, but yeah, I think the type of med and how your body and brain respond to it are key to determining your ability to tolerate alcohol.

If you ask your neuro, he'll probably say no--maybe even hell, no! LOL--but you know what you can handle. I was advised that taking anything for sleep would have to be decided by my docs, but none of them would give me anything, so I started taking "fake" Unisoms, which are essentially twice the strength of Benadryl. At one point, I was taking FOUR just to sleep, but it's not as bad now, so I think my underlying prob is finally getting better, albeit slowly. Without those pills, I get NO sleep at all, so...I had to take matters into my own hands.

I hope this is helpful to you! Go slowly, if you plan to drink at all, and feel it out.

LIZ :)

Hi Tamara

I just read your previous message about Megan, it's really
good that she doesn't let her epilepsy take over her life,
it's so easy to let a condition like that restrict you but
what's the point, life's is far too short. I admire her for
her spirit of adventure.

Now I have a question for the list. I like a beer or two and
a long time ago I was told by my consultant at the hospital
that alcohol can bring on a seizure as quick as anything.
Now because it's my birthday today I have had a bottle of
beer today and one yesterday. How much beer can I safely
consume without it causing me any real problems, I suppose
this is like asking how long is a piece of string but this
is an interesting point. Does it depend on what type of
epilepsy we have, the medication etc? I was given a bottle
of spirits for my birthday but because it is 45 percent
proof I cannot touch it, I drink beer and I try and stay at
about 5 or 6 percent but is that too high? What do you guys
think?

Regards

Adrien
