Re: [epilepsy] Re: just staying in

Hi Adrien,

I think the answer, like you anticipated, is "it depends." I will often have
more simple partials in the days after having a couple drinks (which luckily is
no big deal), but I've found that I can best avoid them if I take my medication
at least one hour before drinking. Usually that decreases the effects of the
meds mixed with alcohol and ensures that I don't have more seizures. I take
lyrica and lamictal and if I don't take them before drinking I get very silly
for hours after as little as one beer and have more small seizures later. If I
remember to take them before drinking (with enough time for them to metabolize
in your body), I will often have no problems. I usually limit myself to one or
two beers. Take it easy, maybe sip on one, and only do what makes you
comfortable. As you know, a lot of the drugs increase the effects of alcohol.
Safety first! :)

Happy birthday!

Wendy

Hi Tamara

I just read your previous message about Megan, it's really
good that she doesn't let her epilepsy take over her life,
it's so easy to let a condition like that restrict you but
what's the point, life's is far too short. I admire her for
her spirit of adventure.

Now I have a question for the list. I like a beer or two and
a long time ago I was told by my consultant at the hospital
that alcohol can bring on a seizure as quick as anything.
Now because it's my birthday today I have had a bottle of
beer today and one yesterday. How much beer can I safely
consume without it causing me any real problems, I suppose
this is like asking how long is a piece of string but this
is an interesting point. Does it depend on what type of
epilepsy we have, the medication etc? I was given a bottle
of spirits for my birthday but because it is 45 percent
proof I cannot touch it, I drink beer and I try and stay at
about 5 or 6 percent but is that too high? What do you guys
think?

Regards

Adrien
