Scott, this is a follow up to the long winded email I sent to you as
Education Writer about Nurses Union endangering children's lives at
California schools seeking help last week. We have prayed for someone to
bring light of the dangerous environment that multitudes of CA school
children are faced with every day. I was elated to see the cover story
written by you and pray your delay in calling us was only due to the need to
wrap up that excellent in depth piece that appeared from you today!
I am confident after reading, twice, your complete front page cover story in
the Sunday Register today on "teachers being put to the test regarding
student evaluations" you can help my daughter, all students and the teachers
with the huge health care crisis occurring daily in our state's schools. Can
you imagine the stress of a teacher watching a student turning blue in front
of her, knowing the emergency meds to stop that seizure are there but she,
due to "Policy and her districts nurses union, can no longer use it even
after being trained to do so all the while knowing her school has no nurse
to provide immediate aide. A follow up article you about the undue stress
put on the teachers by the lack of Nurses and the "Orders" now in place
refusing the administration of medications etc by the teachers, health
assistants etc for children with medical needs and Emergency Health Plans in
place. With the number of Diabetic children sky rocketing now, yes this also
affects those children needing Insulin during a school day too, there is in
fact a deadly game of Russian roulette being played out in our schools
daily.
As per the Disability Rights, California Protection and Advocacy Group, San
Diego Regional Office (which covers Orange County) the Nurse to student
ratio in the state is 1 in 2,500.
My continued due diligence into this issue has led me to learn it is
statewide not just locally to Capo District or Orange County. My original
home state of N.J. has a licensed nurse in every school. By example the
Capistrano Unified District in Orange County, CA per the schools Health
Secretary has 57 schools and only 9 nurses.
Children can not control when their body's need an Insulin Injection or when
they are going to have an intractable or cluster of seizures requiring
immediate life saving response. Having only one floating nurse between 6 - 7
schools on average leaves that student relying upon his teacher to contact
911 now with the "Policy" recently taken and backed by the CA Dept of Ed.
Scott, imagine the fear in a teacher knowing a student is turning blue from
a seizure, imagine the daily number of calls into paramedics now for help
straining our 911 system, imagine the daily stress of a parent watching
their child go off to school into the care of teachers can no longer aide
their child in an emergency. Imagine how a principle feels knowing he or she
is the overall guiding light for hundreds of students when he or she must
tell parents they can no longer use the Medications needed for daily life
support to a parent of one of her pupils, Scott imagine being told as a
parent by your child's principle that they will "Hold your child's meds but
by policy can no longer use those meds till 911 arrives even knowing they
have signed orders from parents and doctors to do so. Scott imagine how many
parents are not even aware this change, regardless of signed Health Plans
and IEP's has quietly been changed the security of their child's life for a
good portion of every day, Monday through Friday. Scott imagine it is your
child.
Federal Law requires each student be given equal opportunity for a safe,
free and equal education regardless of disability. Our "Special Children"
need help too. You created an empowering 3 page article that generated O.C.
Register Sunday Headline cover story position regarding teachers eval's
being linked to student exams etc. Please help bring awareness to the need
for school funding, aide or grants to increase the number of trained nurses
for our children, for the Special Needs Children, for all children.
People need to know how endangered there children are while at school.
People will respond and change will come. There is power in numbers and I
plead for your help to increase awareness of this deadly issue. Please help,
please investigate and write the story. Pat DeLorenzo, father to Gianna
DeLorenzo, 2nd grade Special Ed Student at Tijeras Creek Elementary School,
