Hi Scott,
I don't think your approach to trimming posts would be the best way
in all cases. Rather than trimming all but the first post, the person
who is writing should trim all but the post they are replying to.
They may be replying to the original post, but they are just as
likely to be replying to something someone said in a subsequent post
in the same thread.
