i dunno if you saw it but there is an excellent site called veganbodybuilding that has a lot of great info on it including a forum.  what i like about the site is that it is pretty neutral and tolerant. there are people at different sides of the spectrum and in between, too; in that some are raw fruitarians who will not use powders at all, others who supplement like crazy, and others who mix and match. 

Still, imo at least for myself, it is definitely a challenge to get the protein without processing unless you eat a whole lot of volume. Either you are going to eat huge amounts of grains, beans, nuts & seeds (which all have a decent amount of protein), huger (is that even a word?) amounts of fruits and veggies (which have minimal but some protein in them), or the hugest buckets of bacteria/yeast/fungi stuff like spirulina, chlorella, nutritional yeasts, dried mushrooms (which i have never been able to do personally)...

I think it's important to do what you feel is best for you. Which is why, for me, I continue to do the powders, tofu, tempeh, gluten, etc. to support the mainstay of my diet: veggies, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds...
