Hi Clifton,
I was on Dilantin from 1975-1988. Back then took it with Phenobarbital. That's when I began Tegretal. Then years later switched to Tegretol XR. Then about 5 years I wanted to increase it since my Tegretol XR and Keppra 3000mg each day weren't controlling my seizures. My problem was I couldn't increase my Tegretol XR because any more increase would make me toxic. So switched my Tegertol XR to Trileptal since they are both made by the same company and only a few ingredients apart from each other. In time really upped my dosage to see if they could control my seizures. I upped it to the point I was toxic, then decreased it just below that. Since each new medication you try lowers the possibilities of controlling seizures. I simply went for the surgery! More and more surgery is brought up by Drs. so much earlier then just 5 years ago. I've heard lectures stating that these days, surgery is suggested after even just 3 meds. don't work to control seizures! Well, thats my story (smile). Take care, keep a smile on your face!
