Prince opened up about his one-time struggle with epilepsy in an interview this week, saying that the seizures he suffered as a child led him to develop the flashy on-stage persona he's famous for.
The "When Doves Cry" singer made the revelation in an interview with Tavis Smiley, where he said that growing up epileptic was difficult and took a toll on his relationships with family and friends.
"I've never spoken about this before but I was born epileptic," he said in the Monday night PBS tell-all.
"I used to have seizures when I was young. My mother and father didn't know what to do or how to handle it but they did the best they could with what little they had," he said.
The singer, born Prince Rogers Nelson was bullied in school because of the uncontrollable seizures that he said led him to create the flamboyant "Prince" personality that would rocket him to fame.
"Early in my career I tried to compensate by being as flashy as I could and as noisy as I could," he said.
Prince claims his epilepsy was cured by an "angel" which is why he is no longer afflicted with seizures.
"My mother told me one day I walked in to her and said, 'Mom, I'm not going to be sick anymore,' and she said 'Why?' and I said, 'because an angel told me so,'" the singer said.
The second half of Prince's interview with Tavis Smiley will air tonight on PBS. His latest album is the three-disc collection "Lotus Flow3r."
