I recently responded to a discussion started about Prince's Best Output and I sent a response that does not really cover the influence of this artist on popular music...so, I thought it only respectful to remind a lot of THE FAMILY just how extremely important Prince is to modern popular music.
While trying to maintain a recording career and tour schedule since the late 1970's, it is worth mentioning how many artists Prince has "helped" along the way. Many of his collaborations have been well documented over the years, so just as a review, I wish to offer the following list of people / groups he has worked with...be it directly or indirectly as a writer, arranger, singer, engineer, musician, producer or mentor.
Please feel free to add any names that I may have overlooked as you read this. The list includes, but is certainly not limited, to the following:
THE TIME, THE FAMILY, SHEILA E, VANITY, VANITY 6, APPOLONIA, APPOLONIA 6, SINEAD O'CONNOR, THE BANGLES, TEVIN CAMPBELL, MAVIS STAPLES, LARRY GRAHAM, GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION, JESSIE JOHNSON, JEROME BENNETT, MACEO PARKER, THE P-FUNK ALL STARS, THE PRETTY THINGS, NO DOUBT, MAXINE SULLIVAN, SALIF KEITA, MARIJAH, BENZINO, COMMON, GREGGORI, RAS MICHAEL AND THE SONS OF NEGUS, DR. CORNEL WEST, THE REVOLUTION, PROPELLERHEADS, THE NEW POWER GENERATION, WENDY AND LISA, DR. FINK, ANDRE CYMONE, ROSIE GAINES,USA for AFRICA, BRIA VALENTE, CHRIS WAYNE, JIMMY JAM AND TERRY LEWIS, THE TOM WILLIAMS QUARTET, STEVIE WONDER, SHEENA EASTON, PATTI LABELLE, STEPHANIE MILLS, CHAKA KHAN, MADONNA, ANI DIFRANCO, TLC, NONA GAYE, MADHOUSE, JUANITA WILLIAMS and JILL JONES. And he has contributed to many motion picture soundtracks as well during this time, sometimes uncredited. And sometimes as alter egos Alexander Nevermind and Joey Coco
Additonally, I have heard rumors that Prince had dreams of working with greats like Marvin Gaye, Rick James and Barry White...imagine in your "purple-minds" what those collaborations could have been like.
My personal wish list for who he could work with in the future would include Teena Marie, Fishbone, Chico DeBarge, the BusBoys or R. Kelly...can someone drop him a line for me, PLEASE...mmm, mmm, mmm!!! LOL.
Now, in all fairness, not all of the projects and collaborations have been commercially successful, but I bet the artists enjoyed being in the "presence" of such a generous and prolific artist like the one and only true musical genius Prince!
Much love once again,
John from Texas.
