[epilepsy] RE: Hello

Strange how different AEDs have different effect on different people. I took Depakote (called Epilim here in the UK) for some time and apart from my platelets decreasing a bit and a little extra weight, I was on 2400mg/d with no other effects other than a little sleepiness. It didn't deal with my seizures and better than the other AEDs I tried subsequently. By the was I was also taking Phenytoin (Dilantin in USA) throughout at 400mg/d.

I got double vision from Tegretol which I take now with Mysoline and clonazepam, especially whilst I was still taking Phenytoin. But I have come off Phenytoin and slowly reduced Tegretol to 900mg/d to lose the double vision (actually that went fully at 1200mg). Not sure that 900mg is enough now as I get a lot of szrs in clusters. Might have to see what happen in the coming months to when I see my neuro. I have been offered alternatives in Pregabalin, Retagabine or a couple others (names escape my right now). If there is clear deterioration, a change might be favourable to one of these. Might help by miserably low blood counts too!

Oh one thing I found helpful with double vision on Tegretol - as I take the prolonged release type, which is usually twice daily, was to split the daily dose into three times rather than two.
