Re: [epilepsy] Re: Driving

When I drove back in 1983, I had a seizure while driving and was
told I could never drive again. After I had been seizure free for 1
year after my brain surgery in 2001, I was aloud to drive again
but not alone. I was able to drive from Dec. 2002 until my seizures returned in April 2006. I have not been able to drive since. That
does not bother me a bit. I just went back to the way it was
before, taking buses and cabs.

Hi Rebecca,

Boy can I feel for you!  I went 20 years not driving!  My life was affected beyond words by not driving.  That isn't even touching upon my seizures themselves!  That's not even touching upon how medication side effects affected my life.  We all know those different feelings.

One thing I always thought about driving was that I wasn't jealous,  I wasn't saying why me ect...  I always put myself down as a person!  Feeling I was a failure.  It took me so many years to accept who I am, the situation I'm in and go from there.  I never ever wanted to be a parent because I never felt I would be able to be a good parent because of all it takes.  That is just my feelings about my situation in life.  Yea, I know where you are coming from Rebecca!  Life isn't easy for people who's seizures aren't under control.  I'm not saying there is an easy way to deal with it, that I'm not saying.  I really don't know what I am trying to say here now(smile)!  But hey, 25% of people can't drive who have epilepsy.  That is about 750,000 of people with epilepsy in the United States.  Its tuff I know since I couldn't drive for 20 years!  And never know what day or hour my driving will have to stop by a seizure coming on for an unknown
reason!  That, is on my mind allot!

I have to depend on people to purchase regular daily groceries, and household items. If we are out than too bad. My son will tell me he is bored and wants to go somewhere and I cannot take him. Doctors appointments, I am sure you can imagine, are hell. I do not understand why some people with epilepsy and reoccurring seizures get to drive and others get their license taken. I have been without driving privileges for 2 years now and I would give anything to get to the store and buy my own milk.
