I am new to this group and I am grateful to be accepted. In 2004 a doctor(psychiatrist) put me on two meds both having side effect of weight gain. And did I ever gain it. From 240 pounds(I'm 6 ft 7in.) to over 300 pounds! The neuropsychiatrist I saw, years later, stated outright that it was due to the meds. Epival for Epilepsy and Seroquel for physical symptoms of a psychiatric nature. To compound this the Seroquel has a minute side effect of convulsions which becomes elevated if one's tolerance to convulsions is lower as in our cases, as epileptics. Of course, I am not told any of the above by the psyche in question. So what happens if I have a convulsion due to the side effect of Seroquel? Simple the Neurologist will give me new meds that will never put a stop to this side effect of Seroquel and will wreck my neurological health all the more. Fortunately I only have the weight to contend with. I function well and I have lost some of the weight. But what about society? Those who never spent much time talking to me are all concerned about my obesity that HAD to be self imposed. I have gotten used to these folks some of them rude. The others are told of these meds, which I no longer am taking, and they lay off the topic. It sounds almost like cruelty that those who are obese because of meds are categorised as being the same as those who overeat extensively because of the "obesity problem in America today" by many ignorant people. In my view anybody who is overweight ought to have knowledge of side effects of ALL the meds they take and than with help of specialists for meds attempt to eat healthier. Thanks for reading this as my first post.
