I don't know the answer to this, as Megan almost never gets sick:)
Check everything I suggest with your doctor and/pharmacist, as I am
no expert.
If she can't take sudafed or benadryl, what about Dimetapp? The
active ingredients are different than the other two. Look carefully
at the box, as they have a non-drowsy formula that is similar to
sudafed in ingredients. Another suggestion is to use some kind of
nasal spray, which would just relieve the nasal congestion. Again,
you'd have to ok it with your doctor, but since a nasal spray is
working more locally, rather than systemically, it might be a safer
choice. Even saline sprays can provide some temporary relief.
Suddenly I'm strolling down memory lane. My mother used to use
Vick's Vapor-rub on my chest to help me breathe when I had a bad
cold. They also make little inhaler things that have menthol and I
think eucalyptis which can ease nasal congestion. I'm sure both of
these would be safe, although you should check.
As an aside, I'm surprised that they advised against benadryl, as I
know Megan's doctor said it was ok for her to use it when she was
that age. She was also on depakote at that time and was starting ADD
meds. Her neurologist actually recommended using the benadryl for a
couple of nights if she had trouble sleeping when she started her
concerta. You may want to clarify this with your doctor. I had a
similar situation, where the neurologist said it was fine to take
Adderall with the Lamictal and Keppra, as they didn't interact.
Another person, actually a psychologist was certain that Adderall
could affect anti-seizure meds. When I asked the doctor about it
again, he conceded that in some people ADD drugs can lower their
seizure threshold. Wish he would have mentioned that in the first
place:)
Take care,
Tammy
