I have always been sensitive to any med I have ever taken. It will
take time but you will eventually find a med that gives you an
acceptable balance between control and side effects. I never found a
med that gave me no side effects, I just had to decide how many side
effects I was willing to accept to get control. I ended up on a
combination of 3 meds, and am now down to 2. The side effects made life
difficult, and before my surgery I was still having multiple seizures a
day even on those 3. Though the side effects of the 2 are still
frustrating, it is better then risking having seizures again.
Make sure you are really open with your Dr. about your side feects, and
which ones you simply can't live with. Due to the way anti epileptic
drugs (AED's) work, they all have side effects, but they tend to effect
different people in different ways. The questions I had to ask myself
were this "which is worse, this side effect or seizures?" and if the
side effect was worse I asked "how many seizures am I willing to have in
order not to suffer this side effect?". I did that for every side
effect in order to come up with a decision on what to do. Finally my
epileptologist and I found an acceptable balance between control and
side effects. It is a difficult process, but we have all been there and
can tell you that you will find the balance that works for you.
