Hi Rebecca,
I have thought about this issue a lot, as until recently it looked like Megan would not be able to drive. We drove her everywhere she needed to go, work, college, etc. So I've thought a lot about possible ways to get around and/or do things without being able to drive. I've thought about motorized bikes, but our state considers them the same as motorcycles, so that was out. Some communities allow people to ride in golf carts, but not ours. It's a difficult problem to solve.
How frequent are your seizures? Could you (in warmer weather at least) use a bike to run to the store, just for a few things? You could either get a large basket or carry a few items in a backpack. If you live in a community that provides rides of any kind to seniors or the disabled, you should be able to make use of that. I know in my community, we have a volunteer "taxi service," to drive the elderly to appointments, the store, to get their hair done, etc. They charge something like $5 per ride for gas expenses. If your community is large enough for an actual taxi service or public transportation, those are a couple of other alternatives.
I have no idea where you live, but I would think that if they understood that you are unable to drive, the teachers at a preschool might be able to find a parent or two who would be willing to transport your children to and from preschool. Do you belong to a church, synagogue, or temple? or have neighbors or friends who would be available for the preschool runs? I have a grandson who is 4, and so I understand how you feel preschool can be a very good experience for the young ones. Does your local school district have K4 programs? They usually provide bus service if you are far enough from the school....
Just kind of thinking out loud here. If there is anything I could do to hunt down resources for you in your area, please write to me privately. I'd be happy to see what I could find.
Best wishes,
Tammy
