Actually....
To be somewhat blunt....
Who cares?
At least who cares if *you* manage to prove to anybody Prince might be influenced by any music in his teens and/or early years... or even way after that?
[getting in the soapbox]
What an artist does with the influences he picks up, giving his own twist to it.... that's what matters.
e,g, When Prince covers Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, you can hardly say that is original, but, gosh, the twist he gives to it, is definitly worth listening to. even if the Led Zeppelin versions is the one I grew up with and is -ergo- much better. e.g. after some many concerts, vids, and bootleg tapes from Purple Rain *you* might wonder why The Man is still playing the same old song, but there is always something.... I was crying in his Pruple Rain at Werchter, and I wasn't intoxicated :-)
But name me one artist these days that is TRULY original? Maybe Philip Glass, maybe some very obscure jazz musicians, but beyond that.... forget it.
I am NOT even fit to stand in the shadow of the shadow of Prince, but when I play guitar (and sing -somewhat lousy) and do a coversong (only one by Prince so far [Kiss] and though I liked what I did, the singing was to lousy, so I never posted it on youtube) I am influenced by things I have heard.... and some recordings I do, sound pretty original (hark, I didn't say *good*) .... not because of the song or rendition, but (I hope) because of the twist I gave to it.
Being an artist doesn't mean you should be without influences, hence an artist is never totally original.
We may be born with a "tabula rasa", but we grow up and are influenced.

_start sermon_
p.s. and I don't care about Prince's religion either.... A (wo-)man has to do what a (wo-)man has to do... One of the few (female) cousins I have left is a Jehova witness... and although she and I don't connect on (the way we live our) personal beliefs/religion, we sure as **** keep in contact as much as we can. Fam is Fam, and as long as Prince can entice me to sing "God is Love, Love is God" at the top of my voice (and send chills down my spine), he isn't to too bad in the "spreading the word" department, even if my beliefs are somewhat different.

Couldn't resist, didn't even try.... sorry 'Nita....

been listening to kool and the gang.and it seems that prince is less original than first thought.their music of the 70's sounds like the signature funk line of prince, exemplifying the recycling nature of the music industry.like akon and usher using syths and robotic voices. today.fore xample daisy chain by npg sounds like this kool and gang song to the sample.some of their songs also sound like morris day.even those off beat off tune sounding trumpets prince loves playing, look and the gang has them in the early 70'sstill the best funkster in town but no one is without their influence.especially when i heard smokey robinson, i felt i was listening to a new prince.nicholas
