I hear ya Nicholas, I would say P's 'MPLSoUND' is what differentiates him from other artist and may liken him to groups like Parliament Funkadelic. P was very much so influenced by Kool & The Gang and other artist back in the day. My father and mother's music back in the day was the old school 'Soul Music' that we know of now. You cannot even call Kool & The Gang R&B because that was in fact, Soul Music. The MPLSoUND is what had P step out of the shadow of traditional Soul Artist. He did not even WANT to be categorized as Soul Music or R&B back in the day. Did you know Maurice White was supposed to be the producer of P's first album 'For You' and Prince REFUSED him. I'm glad he did. Some fam/fans have discussed how they would wish that P would work with some of the more established artist of the day but, in truth, what could they really teach Prince that he doesn't already know. P knows how to write a radio friendly top 10 hit. He has it in him but, he's so far away from that now and on another 'vibe' all together. You can liken a lot of his work again, with the artist back in the day and I see that a lot on prince.org with comparisons of 20Ten with other songs they've heard and such and I'm like 'okay, that's cool' and then sometimes I'm like 'whateva'.

I don't know to much past what I heard on the radio back in the day or perhaps what I've heard in my father's basement: the 45's and albums he had that I used to listen to on headphones so I wouldn't disturb him watchin' 'The Bulls' play back in the day (I'm from the South Side of Chicago). I used to see the Kool & The Gang, Gladys Knight & The Pipps, Mr. James Brown, The Meters, Teddy Pendergrass and a lot of Luther Vandross, my dad's favorite artist til today, R.I.P. Luther. That's where I learned about R&B or listenin' to WBMX in Chicago or WGCI and V103, my R&B or Soul Music training stations, I listened to. House Music was my music back in the day or Hip Hop, when I moved to South Florida in my early teens.

Bottom-line, I'm agreein' with you and added (my points) to the 'convo' ...

been listening to kool and the gang.

and it seems that prince is less original than first thought.

their music of the 70's sounds like the signature funk line of prince, exemplifying the recycling nature of the music industry.

like Akon and Usher using syths and robotic voices. today.

fore xample daisy chain by NPG sounds like this kool and gang song to the sample.

some of their songs also sound like morris day.

even those off beat off tune sounding trumpets prince loves playing, look and the gang has them in the early 70's

still the best funkster in town but no one is without their influence.

especially when i heard smokey robinson, i felt i was listening to a new prince.
