[epilepsy] Re: Magnesium

I met Dr Mark Sircus in a group on the internet and he asked me to help him research magnesium - he has a chelating clinic and was not happy that the treament was not beneficial for everyone so decided to look into why this happened. He found out that the patients whom did not benefit from the treatment were all magnesium deficient. So he refused to take anymore patients for chelating unless they got their magnesium levels up first. This let to finding out more about magnesium and how it worked, plus looking for an effective as well as less expensive way of getting magnesium levels up. Anyways, I started researching magnesium too and found a study where a doctor had diabetic peripheral neuropathy in his feet and cured it. As I has lost most of the feelling in my feet except for the servere sharp pains in then at night, I was concerned as to where this leads & worried about not being able to walk. So decided to try the brand of transdermal magnesium that Dr Sircus recommended -and the protocol for using it.

My Petite Mal seizures has never been completely controlled, but after several months I noticed that I was not having any Petite Mal seizures anymore. After a few more months, I started reducing my drugs - at first just the ones for Petite Mal. It was several more months before I started reducing the anticonvulsant for my Temporal Lobe and Grand Mal seizures.

This transdermal magnesium is not in a 'patch' Transdermal means through the skin - it does not need to be in a patch to get threw the skin.
Transdermal 'magnesium oil' is concentrated magnesium chloride in seawater - concentrated magnesium chloride feels like a oil, though it is not an oil and there is in reality no 'oil' in 'magnesium oil'. There is only seawater.

The transdermal magnesium chloride is put into the water in footbaths, whole tub baths. Or it can be sprayed directly on the body and then rubbed in - I use it this way for pain sometimes such as headaches. I also used it this way too when I wanted to target my feet. The footbaths are easy - when I sit at my computer, I ofen have my feet in a pail of warm water with 4 ounces of transdermal magnesium chloride oil or 1 cup of flakes in it. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes for the magnesium to be absorbed. But the baths at night are my favourite and are fantastic. I put 2 to 3 cups of the transdemal magnesium chloride flakes into a tubbath or warm water and soak in it for 25 minutes. Wonderful for a good deep and restful sleep.
This is called "Transdermal Magnesium Therapy". And can be used for various diseases/disorders as well as symptoms - and is the most cost-effective as well as effective way to get magnesium levels up. Magnesium is very poorly absorbed orally for a number of reasons - I have not read nor heard of anybody being able to get magnesium levels up using only oral. Though oral can be combined with transdermal; or oral can be combined with IVs; or oral can be combined with injections. Transdermal magnesium is fairly new so most of the studies have used IVs and/or injections. A Dr Sealy did do a study using transdermal magnesium to see if it could increase magnesium levels and it did increase them in only 6 weeks. It "increased" them in 6 weeks - that is not saying that a person's magnesium levels will be increased as high as they need to be in 6 weeks - it takes about a year to 2 years to get magnesium levels up enough to 'cure'; seizures, peripheral neuropathy, etc.

There are many brands of transdermal magnesium chloride these days - but I only use and recommend the brand that has been tested and contains 35% magnesium chloride and is recommended by Dr Mark Sircus and the IMVA -[ a non-profit organization that Dr Sircus is the Director of]. Ancient Minerals [http://ancient-minerals.com/] oil is the most pure and least irritating of any of the magnesium oils available and Dr. Mark Sircus recommends this one for everyone, for oral use, and use with sensitive skin. It is sourced from deep deep sea beds in the Nederlands. It has been tested for mercury levels as well as other metals and also for chemical toxins. Dr Sircus is very concerned about purity for his patients, many of whom are alao autistic.

The flakes are cheaper so I use the flakes in both footbaths as well as whole tub-baths. I also dissolve the flakes in gallon jub with filtered water and use that when I massage trans magnesium into my feet or legs or skull or forehead etc. I do also have some of the liquid magnesium oil which I use to put into drinking water sometimes as well as orally. And it is just good to have for emergencies

Most brands of transdermal magnesium chloride also only contain 20% magnesium chloride - it would take twice as long to get magnesium levels up adequately. Even what is called Pharmceutical Grade, is high in lead plus only contains 20% magnesium chloride. I am grateful that Dr Sircus has taken the time to make sure his patients are not make sicker by using a poor quality product and that he has passed this information on to others too.

He has written a few articles about this

Dose -

You need to know that transdermal magnesium chloride also detoxes your body. So you need to start off slow and increase the amount that is used after about a week to see how your body reactes.
The transdermal magnesium needs at least 20 to 25 minutes to be absorbed always! In the footbath and whole tub bath , use warm water an soak for 25 minutes. If sprayed on, must leave to absorb for at least 20 minutes before putting clothes over . If you don't get it it at least 20 minutes, the clothes will take most of it off.
Footbaths -
start with 1/4 cup flakes and after a week increase to 1 or 1 & 1/2 cups - can increase it to 2 cups if you wish. If using the oil , start off with 1 ounce and increase to 4 ounces - may go to 6 ounces.

Whole Tubs/Baths -
with flakes start off 1/2 cup and increase to 2 or 3 cups. Is you increase it more, increase by 1/4 cup at a time.
With the liquid oil , start off with 2 ounces and increase to 6 ounces. Can use up to 16 ounces of this in a bath. I only use more then 6 ounces if I am very very stressed.

Spraying/Massaging -
12 sprays 3x a day or 36 sprays. And rub it in. You can spray it anywhere on your skin.
When I used it for my feet, I sprayed it on my feet and legs below the knee on both legs. I used an ounce or more and kept rubbing it in and then added more , rubbing it in, adding more etc. It took me over 20 minutes just to keep spraying it on and rubbing it in. Then I left it to absorb for another 25 minutes. I also used the footbaths but the spraying/rubbing was much more effective for pain especially.

TESTs
There are tests for magnesium deficiency but they are either not reliable of expensive.

Excerpts from the book
Transdermal Magnesium Therapy.
http://magnesiumforlife.com/the-book/

chapter 22 is called "Testing and Estimating Magnesium Levels".

Excerpts --

Page 289 -- "Since magnesium is mainly an intracellular ion, measurement of serum total magnesuim is an inaccurate index of intracellular or total magnesium stores. Thiis means that although your serum levels may be maintained within normal limits, there could be a deficiency in tissues that is not being detected. Blood serum tests will almost always show normal no matter what the magnesium levels are in the cells because the body tightly controls the level of magnesium in the blood because if that level falls, a heart attack is never that far away."

Page 290 -- "Serum levels of magnesium must be kept within a tight range, or the heart stops. Therefore serum levels are maintained at the expense of levels inside cells" Dr Sarah Mayhill.

"When it comes to magnesium it is foolish to place all our faith in tests, especially the blood serum test. Less then 1% of our body's total magnesium can be measured in our blood; the rest is found in the cells and tissues of the body where it is needed for crucial cell processes. It's impossible to make a diagnosis about magnesium levels this way, for magnesium in the blood does not correlate with magnesium levels in the rest of the body. In fact, when we are under stress, our body dumps magnesium into the blood giving the mistaken appearance of normal levels even when the rest of the body is terribly deficient. This is just one more reason to be wary of doctors, clinics and hospitals that continue to rely on a virtually irrelevant magnesium test."

There are a couple of pages about why a person should not rely on blood serum tests and what Dr Sircus thinks about some medical practices.

Now here is information about various tests on pages 293 and 294

"TOTAL RED CELL MAGNESIUM
The results of this test are less variable then serum measurements, but it may still not adequately reflect total body magnesium status in health and disease. This test measures the amount of mineral magnesium inside the red blood cells. However, total red blood cell magnesium levels are not as accurate a measurement of tissue levels as the ionized magnesium test.

SERUM IONIZED MAGNESIUM
The blood ionized magnesium test correlates well with intracellular free magnesium levels. Dr Carolyn Dean favors the blood ionized magnesium test saying it is a very refined procedure backed by results on many thousands of patients and information about it has been published in prestigious journals.

INTRACELLULAR FREE MAGNESIUM
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is another way to treat for magnesium, but it is impractical because of the cost and the lack of routine availability.

SUBLINGUAL MAGNESIUM ASSAY
The Buccal cell smear test of "Exatest" is a safe, non-invasive test that accurately measures the minerals inside cells. This is a test used, for example, during cardiac surgery to determine cellular magnesium levels. A doctor painlessly collects a sample from under your tongue and affixes it to a slide. The slide is then sent to IntraCellular Diagnostics, Inc. for analysis.

MAGNESIUM LOADING TEST
This test meansures urinary magnesium excretion in response to a loading dose of magnesium. Although inconvenient to perform, this test has successfully identified individuals with even a mild degrees of magnesium deficiency. It has been considered an accurate test when renal function is normal.

The ultimate and most dependable indicator of magnesium deficiency is your health. If your body and mind are functioning perfectly; if you have the desire, will, and energy to pursue your life dreams; if you are not saddled by aches and pains of the head , heart , or mind, then you are most likely not magnesium deficient. "

Hope this answers your questions. My doctor is an MD and diagnoses this by symptoms --she has the book by Dr Sircus .

I could probably have stopped the anticonvulsants a year before I did, but I was afraid. For the last 11 months I had been takig tegretol 200mg every second day - I had been on 400mg of tegretol 2x a day.

And once I tried to stop taking the medications and had a Grand Mal temporal lobe seizure. Another time when I was taking Dilantin, I had been taking only one capsule a day for a year and been controlled so my neurologist thought that I might not need anticonvulsants anymore and told me to stop taking the dilantin. 36 hours later I had a Grand Mal convulsion in the shower. So I had a history of sometimes being controlled by very little drugs. So even though I had been taking so little tegretol for 11 months, I was still scared to stop it completely.

It is not a new knowledge that anticonvulsants and antibiotics deplete magnesium. There are even studies showing that epileptics stop having seizures when treated with magnesium - this is not new knowledge either.

In fact, one Neurologist told me that I was 'testbook case', and I certainly was according to the waves and spikes of the EEG. But I guess genetics must be able to be changed or cured with magnesium - because I have not had those seizures since I stopped the anticonvulsants. Of coarse the fact that anticonvulsants deplete magnesium may have been a factor.....I guess it should not be suprising to me that with many epileptics their seizuers get worse with time.
