Hi Sarah,
It would be extremely dangerous for you to try to drive without being
treated by a neurologist. The fact that you say you have had a couple
of "spells" or seizures in the last month is a huge red flag to me.
Do you really want to be behind the wheel of a car when you might
become unconscious or unaware of your surroundings?
I think all states make some kind of provision for people with
seizures to get their license after some period of time without
seizures. This varies quite a bit from state to state, but in my
state (WI) it's only three months. The longest period I'm aware of is
two years. Legally, you can't get your learner's permit if you have
had seizures as recently as you say in any state that I am aware of.
I know that it's frustrating to have to depend on others for
transportation, but when you think about the possibility of injuring
or killing someone because your seizures aren't under control, it's a
no brainer to figure out the right thing to do.
My best wishes to you. My daughter is 20 and is also currently having
seizure issues. She's already taken driver's ed when she was 15 but
has not been able to get her license because her seizures have not
been under complete control since then. She is on better meds now,
and we're working towards her getting her license, but safety is
really the most important thing. My husband actually died in a car
accident this week (not epilepsy related), and we would do anything
to have him back. Your life and others' lives are too valuable to
risk needlessly.
