Re: [epilepsy] Talking to your Doctors

Mariea,

I agree questioning is so very important. No matter how much you trust your doctor and no matter how great they are at what they do I think it is extremely important to keep in mind that they are human like the rest of us and even the best doctor sometimes makes mistakes.

I extremely lucky that I have a great Neurologist, I can ask questions about nutrition, herbs, and supplements and if she doesn't know she's honest, finds the answer, sites sources, and gets back to me quickly  but I still do my own research online and look up any potential prescription medications through the company that makes it. I also ask a Pharmacist before filling a script for any medication or taking any OTC (something I would recommend for everyone even if they have no known medical condition). Pharmacists do have more training than doctors when it comes to medications, have easier access to new information concerning drugs than most of us and that can be extremely helpful. Most are more than happy to discuss potential hazards, common side effects, long term effects, and when it might not be the right medication for you. If not, many times they can just call the doctor's office for you and get a different script while you wait.

In the end it's my health and my decision but I also always make sure I  let my doctor know what my choice is so she can make notes and we can discuss progress/problems.

First I am sorry about your kidney. Medications can help but they also can harm. Doing your own research is fine actually a great thing. That is one of the reasons I am in this group. Learning from others. The internet has tons of good information and also some that isn't.I just think that checking with your Doctor/neurologist is one way of doing part of the research. My primary DR.Hawk would give me his informed opion. When I ask about something, he will be honest and tells me he will do some research, talk to other DR.s or whatever. I believe he wants whats best for me. Even when he tells me something about a med, herb,I still do my own research (internet, books ect) then I decide for myself what I want in my body. The neurologist I have just started seeing is also my primary Dr.s neurologist. That makes me feel at ease as well. I think of us being myself, Dr. Hawk and Dr. Myers as being my health care team. Different people feel strongly about
different sides of things and I will continue to question my Dr. before I take anything.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
