Re: [fast5] Re: Breaking through a plateau?

Well, government fear mongering is sort of off topic, so I won't go there (there are some excellent books by pilots and the airline industry about *their* take on it, which is a lot more in depth than my take on it anyway). The airline industry is paranoid about the safety of their planes ... and rightly so, and their track record is actually really good ... but their viewpoint is a lot more nuanced and they are working for new rules.

As for bringing foods while travelling (which IS on topic I think!) I bring thermoses a lot, mainly non-spill beverage cups. I have them empty while going through "the line" and they always look inside (and have for years). Then on the other side I fill them up with water, coffee, etc. My main goal is just to have something that doesn't spill ... WHY they serve drinks in little plastic cups is beyond me. Also dried foods, like smoked salmon, jerky, protein bars, dried fruit, nuts, cheese, keep fine and are good travel foods in general. And you can bring dried soup and have the stewardess give you some boiling water for it.

As for eggs though, I do know something about those. We have chickens, and I tell you, eggs are one of the best foods. They have lecithin for one thing, that is really good for your heart and blood pressure. The kind of protein they have is one of the best sorts. There is no correlation between eating lots of eggs and any health problems ... the Japanese actually eat the most eggs per capita and they aren't exactly getting lots of heart attacks! If you are on a budget, eggs are about the best buy for good protein there is. They are quite filling too. Rats fed on an egg diet thrive just fine and appear to be resistant to Type 2 diabetes:

We've been eating more and more eggs, as we've learned better how to make good stuff with eggs. In most countries, eggs are NOT for breakfast, they are for dinner. Think frittata, quiche, pudding, custard. Or the Japanese and Koreans: an egg over easy, on top of rice (the yolk gets in the rice and though it sounds weird, it's wonderful: everyone in my family loves it). Also eggs in fried rice, egg omletty things in the middle of sushi rolls.

As for salmonella: salmonella is a real thing, and the chickens that got it in the egg were kept in some pretty awful conditions. I expect they will be inspected a whole lot better now. But in most places you can spend a little more, and get eggs from more local chickens that are probably treated pretty well (at least kept in a nice big clean barn). Better still, make a deal with your local "egg lady".

It's also way easier than you think to keep your own chooks ... mostly what they need is a kind of aviary with a sawdust floor. They will happily get rid of your kitchen scraps and weeds you pull up, and provide you with eggs and really good manure for your garden. They are way less work and space than a dog or cat, cheaper than a lizard, and if you raise them from chicks they are great pets.

Some people keep them in moveable pens too, and ours used to be loose and occasionally we let them out to de-bug the yard. But they like to be under cover (away from eagles) and to scratch in dirt rather than grass, and when the predators got too predacious we moved ours into a pen and they are actually laying more eggs and seem quite happy.

Anyone join me in declaring this Government fear-mongering, B.S.?
