Re: [epilepsy] NEED HELP PLEASE! Topamax (Topiramate) QUESTION

Hi Gina,
Every body and mind is different. But if your concerns are this strong~I also learned that a Mother's instincts should be listened to by a dr and even a patient's. I had a Dr who wanted to change my medicines every time a medicine representatve showed up to tell her about a new medicine, and it wasn't just me, she would test all her patients on it. I began asking her about this and saying, "Why fix what isn't broken?" Some Dr's do kickbacks from drug companies et for prescribing enough patients to a new drug. Other Dr's are very careful and wait and search carefully for a different or new drug that is well tested and may be more helpful for their client.
Topomax was, for me and several others, the most painful trip thru a medicine that we had ever experienced with the side effects lasting for months after for many of us who blindly trusted this Dr who was literally experimenting on many of us. Topomax AND its generic form caused more seizures of a different kind than we had experienced before, headaches, light flashing double with any light, the feeling of a cell phone on vibrate going off in my head and making a repetitive buzzing noise with each passing car and migraines. It took my brain 4 months to recover from this drug's punishment, it caused true seizures in a friend of mine who had never had a seizure in her life, her recovery took a good 6 months. Everyone's mind and body function are different. For some this drug is devastatingly monstrous, for some it does good and gives results, for others the side effects are mild compared to the benefits.
If I felt like you do I would google seizures & topomax, topomax & side effects, and as many as I needed to, also look up topomax for young kids, also go to www.pubmed.com and read all you can there, tell your dr your concerns, see why dr chose this particular medicine~it is an older medicine that has been around for some time...it may be the best option for your child's particular seizure set...it may not.
Trust your gut if you have such strong feelings, ask another dr's opinion, etc...
Others here have likely had experiences of different kinds with topomax and generic topomax and even the "new" generic form of topomax?

Subject: [epilepsy] NEED HELP PLEASE! Topamax (Topiramate) QUESTION

My sons neurologist wants to start him on 25 mg. 2x day of the generic form
of Topamax...(Topiramate) .

He is currently taking 2,000 mg. a day of Keppra XR. He is 7 and weighs
approx. 70 pounds. He has grand mals & complex partials mainly.

He has been put on numerous other seizure meds in the past only to find that
they caused him to cluster and have an increase in frequency of seizures. I
m really worried about starting him on this new med. I have also heard that
Topamax can cause severe dizziness...is this true?

I've had his new medication for over a week now.Have been too afraid to
start him on it.

I'd appreciate any opinions concerning this please! Thanks!

Gina
