I can't say specifically for Lamictal, but many AEDs take some time
to reach therapeutic levels in the bloodstream. Once you reach this
therapeutic level, you want to maintain that therapeutic range of the
drug in your bloodstream. There are a few AEDs that have a pretty
short half life, so this is not as true for them. Keppra is one with
a short active time in the body. If you only took one dose of
Lamictal, say, you would have a peak of the drug some time after
taking it, and then the levels would continue to drop until you took
your next dose. If you only took it once a day, it is quite likely
that your blood levels would drop below the therapeutic range. And
one thing I do know about Lamictal. It can actually cause seizures if
you take too much or too little. So I think that your doctor wants
you to keep the level of Lamictal more or less constant in your
bloodstream.
I hope this makes sense to you :)
