With this I would really talk with the doctor. This group can only tell you so much. But you need the doctors advice with her being so young.
I wish all the best.
Take care...
Ashley

Subject: [epilepsy] Education Question...

Hello,
I was hoping you could help me with something, forgive me if I go all over the place here but I'm just gonna type and hope that it comes across ok... My daughter Meg is seven and in first grade, she has partial complex seizures, but hasn't had a seizure in almost two years (well controlled on meds Phenobarbital and Keppra). She has been in PT, OT, and Language since before pre-k. Last year she struggled academically and repeated Kindergarten. Things
she experieced difficulty with were sight words, rhyming (simple words like cat/hat, nursery rhymes, even the ABC's prove difficult), she has a short term memory processing issue, one to one corespondence, and counting backwards...
This year she's having difficulty with math (counting backwards, before and after, skip counting, etc..) and reading comprehension. She has a tendancy to transpose numbers and sometimes read and spell words backwards. I don't know if I should have her tested for dyslexia? If it's common in kids with epilepsy? Or how much of it is developmental. She's doing well with her sight words and spelling this year which is a plus, but I'm looking for help. She's tutored twice a week and then we work with her at home and I don't know if this is normal for a child with epilepsy or if there are websites or books out there that can help me, so I thought what better way of finding out than reaching out to all of you. It breaks my heart because she's such a good kid, she loves to learn, but has a hard time socializing due to her delays.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kirsten
