Amanda,
I'm not sure if anyone else has replied about this yet, but reward systems seem
to work well for this age group to help them comply with medication. Have you
tried this sort of thing with Erika? stickers are always good.
If she doesn't like the taste of the tablet, maybe you could let her drink it
with a little bit of juice and then offer her a little pudding or something
right afterward (maybe out of a particular place in the refrigerator that's
special to her and that her siblings, if any, or parents, cannot have. then she
can go get it herself after she takes her medicine. this gives her some power
and independence). since 4 year olds need to assert their autonomy and make
choices, you might say, "do you want to take your medicine with the white grape
juice or apple juice?" As far as rewards, you could do one sticker for each time
she takes her medicine, and if she gets x stickers in one week she gets a small
prize. just some ideas. I'm sure you have tried many of your own already, but
good luck!
Wendy

Subject: [epilepsy] Refusing meds
My daughter Erika (4) has started to refuse her meds. She is currently on
Trileptal 300mg/5ml twice a day. THANKFULLY, I have not seen any seizure
activity other than her occasional absent seizures. Do any of you all know of
any chewables meds? She has been on Tegretol and that was a nightmare!!
Amanda, mom to Erika 4, EP since 3wks old
