Re: [epilepsy] I've had it!

Mark,

I've had my credit ruined once already by this situation. When NJ revoked my
license, they actually sent a self-addressed stamped envelope for me to
physically send it back. They also suspended my license here in CA for six
seizure-free months (i.e. forever) because CA state law requires the ER to
fax the DMV when people have seizures. This is also the law in NJ, PA, and
NY, the other three states I've lived in... wonder what the chances were of
that.

NOW I have to ride a bike to work. I guess it's a cushy commute though, only
5 miles, from Santa Clara through Sunnyvale to Cupertino. And I can
telecommute at this job if I don't want to bike in. It's the perfect job for
an epileptic ("person with epilepsy"). I highly recommend going into
computers.

Sometimes I have seizures here; they just have my wife come pick me up. If I
see her here I instantly know what happened (despite my memory being
erased).

When the license got suspended, I just went to a local bike store and
splurged on a nice one. You might as well. It's kind of crazy that you can
ride a bike if you can't drive a car, but I guess nobody worries about
epileptic bikers ("bikers with epilepsy").

I was kicked off a bike once by a seizure in 2007 on my way back from a
bookstore. I wear a sterling silver curb-link medical bracelet that says
"EPILEPSY / SEE CARD IN WALLET". The card says not to call 911. But the
people who saw me unconscious on the side of the road and drove past me (!)
called 911 (which was already illegal in CA, with the recent cellphone law,
now that I think about it). They knew the whole story when I woke up in the
ambulance.

This bracelet is totally scraped up now; I should get it engraved again.

Just a friendly reminder: Please remember to sign your post and remember to clean up messages when you reply to them.  This is especially important if you are on digest.  This not only helps out the list owner but, it makes messages much easier to read when they arrive in our inboxes.
