Re: [epilepsy] Phenobarbital

I have had EP for over 50 years and have
been on Dilatin and Phenabarb for over 20 years.

My last sz was 1  year ago but I had been sz free
5 years before.

For whatever reason (who knows) I hadn't taken
my meds for 3 days.  My Dr. kept me on the same
meds because they had worked so well for 5 years.

One of my daughters now puts out my meds and she
calls me at nite after 8 pm and another daughter calls
me in the morning after 8 am.  That has worked pretty
good  except I would like to put them out myself.  I have
a timer that goes off at 8 o'clock morning and evening --
if I remember to set it. She brings a new container every
Sat nite.

This was set up by my oldest daughter, my pastor and a
lady from the retirement center where I live.

The strength of the Phenabarb is 30 or 32  mg I think.
I take 4 phenobarb a day and 3 Dilantin Mon, Wed, and
Fri and 4 the other days.

Is anyone here taking phenobarbital? Does anyone know why certain strengths are still available like 16.32 mg and other strengths are not available like 15 mg? What, if anything, did your doctor suggest as a better alternative med? I read that PB has "long term side effects" but cannot really find any listed. How about Klonopin?

Thanks in advance,
SJ

I was on Phenobarbital, in conjunction with Dilantin, from the time I was in elementary school, until 9th Grade(16yrs.-old; 1983).  At 16, I was switched from the combo, to Tegratol.(I switched from Tegratol, to Carbitrol when I was 36yrs.-old)  I was told that, as a child reaches high-school age, they lose there effectiveness.
