Yes we can tell the difference here too Millie. I don't take Phenytoin any more (after 30 years). Here in the UK, Phenytoin was usually in a gel capsule (if the Dr had specified capsules) and was until recently called Epanutin, and it was very cheap indeed. The new supplier of this version has taken the opportunity to increase the price 16 fold – not that this affect the majority of people with epilepsy in the UK as we are exempt from prescription charges. But it is, nonetheless, a price increase to our NHS. The generic phenytoin was a hard tablet as I recall. Yes there is always a difference in appearance with whatever drug you take, compared with the branded version.

The standard Dilantin and genereric are different here.

They are both capsules but different colors.  So you know

immediately which one you have..
