RE: [epilepsy] Phenobarbital

Hi SJ,

I'm in the UK and I take Primidone (Mysoline), along with Tegretol Prolonged Release and clonazapam (branded as Klonopin in the US). According to our British National Formulary, which is the doctors pharmacopeia, Phenobarbital is available as 15, 30 and 60mg tablets. I mention Mysoline as it is largely converted into Phenobarbital in the body. So both these do have problems with long term use in that when you come to withdraw from them, it needs to be done extremely slowly over a long period (maybe 2 years) to minimise the risk of seizures occurring. Klonopin is going to be similar. There's a whole range of AEDs available now to try, four more in the last 10 years. I know this http://www.epilepsysociety.org.uk/list-anti-epileptic-drugs-adults is a UK list, but it shows those used here, listed as 'first line' then 'second line' drugs, and their principle use and common side effects.

Is anyone here taking phenobarbital? Does anyone know why certain strengths are still available like 16.32 mg and other strengths are not available like 15 mg? What, if anything, did your doctor suggest as a better alternative med? I read that PB has "long term side effects" but cannot really find any listed. How about Klonopin?

Thanks in advance,
SJ
