Melissa,
I've had a MedicAlert around my neck from '91-now, r. wrist since '96 and a
MedicAlert watch on my l. wrist for around 2 yrs., nothing keeps a paramedic
from taking me to a hospital. Even though, they should first ask, Do you
have diabetes? If you aswer Yes, it's an emergency requiring a hospital.  If
No; then ask, Have you been diagnosed with epilepsy? If Yes it's not an
emergency, unless another seizure begins just after the first one.  If the
answer is No, it may be an emergency and you need to be seen by a hospital
doctor. If you are taken to a hospital you recieve a bill from the Fire
Department (which he works for) for, Ambulance Service. There's isn't any
cost for their quick response in coming unless you're taken to a hospital.
Also, you'll get a bill from the Hospital and another a separate one for
Physicians Service. Even though it wasn't needed or necessary, but you were
there on that day! Police officers are different
story for me, they seem to be looking for criminals and if you didn't had
any medication in your pocket and they can't arrest you for Possession of
Drugs, they seem to be OK, and look you over for and decide that the seizure
wasn't do to alcohol or drug use and if you're responsive to their
questioning they let you leave. I've been charged with Possession of Drugs a
couple of times and enen though ADA's title II tells them that must provide
water to all people with cardiac problems, epilepsy etc. in order for them
to take their medicine with, I've never been provided my needed medicines
because they tell me. "That's now police evidence & you can't handle it".

Melissa,

That bothers me that you have an Medical ID but it doesn't do any good.
You are right-- they should know how to calm a person who is having a
sz .

I have a Medical Alert bracelet that is hollow. In it is this info:
My name, address and phone, DOSAGE, name and home/work numbers of
my 2 daughters who live in town & my Dr.'s name and phone. I made it on
the computer in small print. I make 12 at a time so I always have one
to put in -- in case it gets wet. On the top of the bracelet it says
Millie and underneath close to my skin it says epileptic. When they first
made it they had EPILEPTIC on the top. I told them I didn't want to
be reminded of EP every time I looked at my arm. So they changed it.
I got mine at the jewelry store.

There was 1 time I didn't know my name, where I lived, or if I had
children. At that time I wasn't wearing my ID necklace. The police
thought I was drunk and said so when he called my daughter. She said,
"She is not drunk she has EP". After that a policeman told me that
they would rather look on your arm than around your neck for ID.

No one has ever had to use it. I use it myself when I can't remember
my one daughter's phone number.
