It makes me wonder if you can have an amygdala taken out on one side, and
just use the one on the other side to have all your fun. I have no idea.
I have to tell you, in my twenties one of the post-ictal effects I had was
an attack of real, strong, intense horniness. (It was like alcohol; a
seizure would help the desire, but hinder the performance.
So my girlfriends would get confused by the immediate propositions. "You
just had a grand mal seizure, your head is bleeding still [usually
fingernail injuries], you're still dizzy, and you just threw up. You don't
look very sexy right now." [That's pretty serious, considering my normal
baseline sexiness.] Sometimes they went along with it. I rationalized it to
myself: "I guess I'm just trying to get my mind off what just happened?" It
took me a long time to realize, duh, it was a real post-ictal effect from
seizures confusing my amygdala. But I actually liked it.
Of course now that's all over and I come out of them with anhedonia. My
amygdala isn't confused anymore, it's just paralyzed. Sex, ick. Women look
like men to me. And food, ick... the sight of it makes me ill. I take
advantage of the revulsion to food, and go on brief little diets, popping B
vitamins. This lasts several days and the recovery involves various bouts of
depression. There's often an annoying stage of recovery where I shoot up off
the couch thinking I have to get something, every few minutes. I then lie
down and immediately want to stand up; I stand up and want to sit; I sit
down and immediately want to walk. It lasts half a day.
Recovery takes a long time. I think it's all over, and that I'm back to
myself again. And then, surprise surprise, tomorrow I feel noticeably more
with it- oh well I guess I was still recovering yesterday, but now I'm fine.
And the next day, same thing, day after that, same thing, day after that,
same thing, mental improvement getting less and less noticeable all the
time, but still noticeable more than a week after. My new theory is that a
seizure cluster comes after recovery is complete. Which would imply that
full recovery actually takes three weeks even if it stops being noticeable
halfway through. Eventually I start getting a strange premonition.
fine, and things have been good for so long, for weeks... it won't be long
now. I start popping Ativans, and I usually- not always, but a lot of the
time- I call it within a day.
