Lemon Barbecue Sauce

2 tablespoons butter -- (1/4 stick)
1 medium onion -- finely chopped
2 garlic cloves -- minced
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Melt the butter in a small, heavy saucepan over medium heat. add the onion and garlic and saute just until transparent, about 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in the tomato sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, zest, and seasonings, and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes. Apply the glaze while its still warm.
Yield about 2/3 cup.
This full-flavored combination gives citrus overtones to grilled [favorites]. It is especially refreshing in hot weather. You can store this sauce in the refrigerator for up to two days, but remember to rewarm it over low heat.
