Hi Clifton (CBI),
A great web site concerning allot of different aspects to epilepsy is my.epilepsy.
Yes, surgery is being talked about more and more as the technology has grown and more and more, Drs. are going quicker into looking into surgery because of this. One thing that must be determined first is if your electrical activity in the brain causing your seizures is from one area of the brain or not. People who have activity in both left and right temporal lobes unfortunately rarely are able have the most common surgery called either a left or right temporal lobotomy. In those situations the possibility of having whats called VNS is growing in use. VNS will reduce seizures, can't stop them. Take a look at the site below to learn more. And of course ask us all more questions about it if you like. As far as what it costs, it all depends on the insurance you have. There are big differences in the costs because of insurance coverage. Take care, keep a smile on your face!

> There has been a lot of reference to those having surgery. Can someone(s) explain what makes a person a candidate to have surgery? Is it the number of seizures one has, the location in their brain that they begin, inability to gain control using medications or what? I keep reading about these surgery's and don't know where to start to find out if it would work for me. How does insurance cover these? Is it considered elective? Is it beyond experimental. What are the risks? Could you worsen the level and type of seizures you currently have? Do you need to be at a major medical facility to have this surgery or are more and more hospitals capable of performing it?
