[epilepsy] Re: benign rolandic epilepsy

Hi Nicki,

Do you know the name of the particular seizure disorder your son has? What kind(s) of seizures does he have? Children often have absence seizures and outgrow them, but for some reason I'm gathering that this is not your son's seizure type. Tell us more.

My daughter is an adult now (24) but was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 10. She has JME, Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, but hers was not a typical case. She started with only tonic clonic seizures and never had any myoclonic seizures until she was 17. They knew it was JME by her brain waves, which fit the classic pattern, even though her seizures didn't. She did not outgrow her seizures, but JME is easier to control than some other types of epilepsy, and Megan leads a very normal life.

When she was young, the only trigger we could find was lack of sleep. She currently will not have a seizure unless she has forgotten a couple doses of her medication. We had to experiment with medication until we found a combination that worked for her, and I would encourage you to keep working at seizure control for your son. Don't be too quick to settle for less than complete control of his seizures.

My best wishes to you and your son,
Tammy
