Re: [epilepsy] Motivation vs. Depakote, Trileptal or Topamax

I can't speak to Depakote, as I was never on it, but I was on both
Topamax and Trileptal at the same time for over 3 years. The
combination of those hit me very hard. I was fatigued, and my energy
was low. They made my concentration bad, which caused my memory to
suffer because I had to repeat things over and over to remember them.
This becomes very frustrating, and I began to think "why bother when I
just have to repeat it so many times". My guess, it isn't motivation,
it is energy and frustration from side effects. It is a very hard thing
to explain to someone who hasn't been on them, but it isn't that you
don't want to, it is that it is so HARD to do. Everything we do takes a
certain amount of concentration and energy. On those meds I had to keep
saying to myself "if I do____ I know I won't have the energy to do ____
later". I could only suspect that she is going through that, and isn't
able to balance what she does and doesn't do. It is about choices.

I would suggest coming up with what are "must dos" for her, and "nice to
dos". Must dos are even simple things, like brushing her teeth, to more
complex things like doing homework. Nice to dos are things like playing
computer games, to chores that someone else can do. She needs
understanding from you, and part of that is not expecting her to do more
then she can actually handle in a day. One of the most wonderful things
my husband did for me while I was so terribly sick before and after
surgery, and on 3 meds, was not expect from me more then I could
actually handle. When you make those lists think "what is the absolute
minimum I have to expect her to accomplish every day". Over time, as
she handles more, and learns how to deal with the side effects, some
thigns can move from the "nice to do" list, to the "need to do" list.

Now that I am off Topamax, and on a lower dose of Trileptal along with
Lyrica, I know the meds were havng a huge impact on me. Try to help her
balance those must do's and need to do's so that she is not under
pressure, but still has energy to do things she enjoys.
