Re: [epilepsy] **Help Me Understand**

Hi Libby,
Welcome to the group.  My name is Tristin.  I'm 26 years old, and I have temporal lobe epilepsy.  I was diagnosed when I was 9 years old, but I remember having auras before then.  I've never suffered any head trauma, so the cause of my epilepsy is unknown.  I'm sorry to hear that your surgery was unsuccessful.  I had a left temporal lobectomy Nov 08, and I've been seizure free since the surgery.  My seizures were bilateral (left and right temporal lobe), so there's still a high risk of me having another seizure.  I'm currently on Tegretol, but before my surgery, I tried many different AEDs and many different combinations.  I have mostly partial and complex partial seizures; rarely a tonic clonic.

My auras are very complex.  First, I suddenly become really aware of my surroundings.  I get a high sense of spatial awareness.  It's like a scary "Ah ha" moment.  I then get a nauseating epigastric rising sensation, like everything inside me is rising up.  It kind of feels like going down a rollercoaster or free falling, but in a scary way.  It's hard to talk during this time.  It feels like talking will make the rising feeling worse.  Towards the end of the aura, I get a metalic taste in my mouth.

Well, that's the aura for you.... Sometimes that's all that happens, but other times the seizure goes from partial to complex partial.  I become unresponsive and may perform automatisms (pinching, scratching, walking around, etc).

Again, welcome to the goup.  We're a very caring and understanding group. Feel free to ask any questions.

God bless you,
               Tristin Seagraves :)

Hi everyone!

My name is Libby. My aunt is the one who wrote in asking questions about me.. I first want to thank you for helping her and the invites to join.
I was diagnosed with complex partial epilepsy and have petit mal seizures. I was hit on the head in the swimming pool at the age of 12. I was contolled right away with topamax for 13 years. I started having seizures again after my 2nd child was born (I did not come of med.s while pregnant). I have seen a neurologist and now a epileptologist. In the last 6-7 years I have been on almost all of the med.s available. I went in for a right temporal lobectomy 2yrs ago with no improvement.
I do have auras. They seem to be a feeling of being scared? I am realizing I may be having a panic or anxiety attack??? I am currently on Lamictal.
I am curious to what others feel when they have an aura?
Thank You again for the chance to join a support group like this.

Libby
