Hannah,
Each person has to find the med that works for them. There are different triggers-- like hormones, flashing lights,
not enough sleep, stress (which a test could cause) etc. It is different with each person.
I have had EP for 48 years. My first ones were when I was pregnant with my second and third daughters.
I have been on different meds but right now I have been controlled with Dilantin and Phenabarb for over 20 years.
My last sz was 2 years ago and before that it was 4 years. But just because they work for me doesn't mean
they will for anybody else.
I suggest you start keeping a diary when she takes her meds, what was going on before she had a sz, was
happened during the sz. Since she always has them in the morning-- what was she doing the nite before, etc?
Since she is falling down, my guess is that she has tonic clonic or grand mal szs.
That is what I had until 15 years ago. Now I don't fall but my daughters say that my brain is scrambled for
about 2 days. Ask your daughter if she smells , feels, or hears something before she has a sz. That is called
an aura or a warning that a sz is coming. I never in my 48 years have had an aura.
They will quite often want to sleep. When I had the grand mal szs my tongue was sore at the base and
quite often I was sore all over. When you have a grand mal sz all your muscles are used like if you had
done some exercises that your body is not used to.
I also am over weight. Your Dr just has to try different meds and you can't count on that they will go away
in 2 years. My Dr. told me that I could be without szs for 20 years (taking my meds) and they could start again.
A lot of us don't know why the szs start. I have just decided I have EP and I need to take meds for the rest of
my life.
Educate your self about EP on the computer. Ontario Epilepsy has a lot of info and so does Julie when she writes.
She has a URL at the end of all her letters that you can click.
Has she had any tests?
Millie

Hello,

My daughter is 16, she had her first seizure 8 months ago during school exams. We were so sad and upset and we kept wondering why it happened and we thought it was related to hormons and contraceptive pills that she was taking because her periode was not punctual. She has been taking lamictal since then 100 mg she had no seizure for the next seven months. Once she stopped taking the hormones and contraceptive pills and during her periode she had another seizure and the Dr increased her dose to 150mg and after two weeks she had another seizure. I am worried because she falls down and injures her self during seizures and she sleeps the whole day and does not go to school after.

My questions are;

-Is there a relation between hormons and epilepsy

-What can I do to prevent her from getting injured especially that her seizures happen early in the morning 5- 6 oclock when we are sleeping and we wake up at her falling on the floor.

- are there any previous indications that she will have a seizure.

- are there any medications or diet that may reduce seizures( silver bracelets ).

-Is magnesium effective in her case.

- Can we control the seizures after two years as her Dr. told us.

- Does weight count( she is a bit over weight)

Sorry for taking so long but it is the first time and I am anxious to have answer if possible.

I personally prefer the whole tub baths, if I have the time. I feel these are most effective - at least in my experiance they seem to be for me. I also like the foot-baths for their covenience - I can soak my feet while reading my email for 20- 25 minutes and not go to any great trouble to get my magnesium. [ Maybe I am lazy but needing to do something every day for months or years can get to be a bit wearying , for me anyhow. Patience is not one of my strong suits....] And whereas both the magnesium oil and the magnesium flakes can be used for both whole tub baths & foot baths, the magnesium flakes are less expensive then the magnesium oil. So given that, I prefer the flakes for myself. Though when I want to target a specific problem or issue, I use the magnesium oil for that as I can spray and rub it on the area that I was effected directly - this just speeds up the healing of that specific place though, one still needs to get the complete body
magnesium levels up though to keep the effects of the healing and keep the body balanced.
For getting rid of seizures, the whole body's magnesuim levels need to be up. Maybe rubbing magnesium oil into the head might speed it up, but it could be dangerous to think that the seizures would not happen again and stop taking the drugs if the whole body's magnesium levels were not up too. Personally I think it is better to take longer and do aa good job of thoroughly getting the magnesium levels up as high as possible before going off of all drugs. Seizures are not always dangerous, but they can be and I don't see any need to take unnecessary risks.
If you have headaches or want or need to get rid of pain, the magnesium oil is best for that as you can spray it on and rub it in. Of coarse though, you can put 3 or 4 cups of the magnesium flakes into a large plastic jug and pore filtered water in it to dissolve the flakes and use that to spray and rub. But you need to keep in mind, that the dissolved flakes are only about half as strong, or have half as high a concentration of magnesium, as the 'magnesium oil'. But still even using more of the flakes , it is still cheaper to use the magnesium flakes then the 'magnesium oil'. However, I do keep an half gallon of the magnesium oil in the house for emergencies plus also for things like headaches, etc. I got Lyme Disease about 18 months ago and every six months or so I get a pain in my left shin bone - it feels as if something is actually gnawing on it. That is another reason why I like to have the magnesium oil available. I am not fond of pain.....
Sorry that I can not give a short anwser. But it really depends on the individual and how they prefer to use the product. Once upon a time I used to say that one had to do the baths - but there are people whom for one reason or another cannot take baths. Plus some people truely hate baths....and when people truely hate something they are not going to keep doing it..... And if one does not do this everyday, then they lose much of the progress they have made in getting the magnesium levels up. It is okay to miss day or two for special reasons, but not every week..
But if how you use the transdermal magnesium is not an issue, then do the whole tub baths every night and use the flakes. If you want to do foot baths too everyday , that is okay after a week or so. That will speed getting the magnesium levels up.
If you have a reaction, like a rash or diarrehea - you are using too much too soon. That would be a detox reaction or herxheimer reaction.
If you have any questions at anytime, you can email me off list. When I started using the transdermal magnesium both Dr Sircus and his research assistant was around to answer any questions for me - and then they started a yahoo group for those useing the transderaml magnesium and it was around for 2 years, so I always knew I could ask questions if I needed to.
But, if you use the baths, I really think you will enjoy using the magnesium... ......
blessings
Shan
