Re: [epilepsy] Re: Ski ing and epilepsy

Ed,
I've was DXed with epilepsy in'74 it has remained uncontrollable the whole time.I hadn't been aware of any seizures since 12/5/09 when released from from a hospital in NY after a 5day video eeg where three seizures took place,I wasn't aware of any of those. So,I don't know if some happened that I'm just don't know of.In '89 I skied for the last time,I crashed and tore my right knee's Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL).At the hospital when having it repaired they refused to give me any anti-epilepsy medicine because one them (dilantin) was measured to be just in them toxic zone, theraputic level of Dilantin is 10-20 mgs. per lt. of blood (mg/lt) toxic is above 20.So they weren't going to add to it.They should have contacted the neurologist and could have looked for any sign of toxicity. After being discharged I had a seizure and I bit into the girl's hand as she stuck it into my mouth,She was driving and not aware that nothing is to be placed into the
persons mouth having a seizure. She was driving me to her house.Afterward both of us were taken to a different hospital that suctured her hand and measured my blood levels to be very low,it had dropped straight down to four which took four months to be back up to 21. I sued the hospital, they gave me a free ACL replacement and more because they refused to give medicine without doing anything else.

I have had epilepsy for over 35 years, nighttime seizures, but I am able to ski.  I go out to Utah every year and ski 5 out of the 7 I am there with my family.  As long as you do not overexert yourself and drain the medication out of your blood before you take it again, skiing should not be a problem.  Also, check to see if you would be able to take an extra pill on days you feel too much was done.

We also owna ski boat which we havent used for over a year but she skiis too. We are thinking about if we should take her snowboarding again this year, my husband says o course we should. I worry about the lifts, I am there now with her toa ssit her if she needs help but I worry about later on. She is about to return to gumnastics but still is not allowed on the high beam or climbing.

I understand your struggle and I think you have to decide what is best for your son. Megan has a helmit for sowboarding but still I know it can be a deadly sport.

He wants to learn to ski, my husband thinks that he shouldn't since it may be asking for trouble in the future. I take the view that as long as we take the appropriate precautions, it is OK to start and then review later as he gets older, since it will be a while before he is out and about too much (we don't ski).
