Hi Steve,
My Aunt lives in Chicago and has never had a driver's license, much
less a car. You can get anywhere you want with a combination public
transportation and cabs. It really is cheaper than owning a car,
particularly if you figure in all the really high parking fees in the
city. There are usually restaurants and a grocery store or two within
easy walking distance, which makes it really easy not to drive. My
aunt has moved but we used to just have to walk a long block to get
to the grocery store and only two or three to get to several
restaurants. That's why I am encouraging Megan to move into the city,
at least Milwaukee, although their public transport isn't as good as
Chicago's. Megan's been raised in smaller towns and the idea of
living in the city kind of intimidates her. Maybe when she goes to
college in Milwaukee she can decide if city life is for her or not.
Steve, if you live in the Chicago area, would you be up for getting
together for coffee or something some time? I live near Milwaukee and
would be happy to make the trip if it would mean getting to meet you
face to face.
Take care,
Tammy
