[epilepsy] increasing keppra pills

My 16 year old son has just started having seizures within the last year. His doctor started him on keppra in January. He started taking three 500 mg pills of keppra xr at bedtime. Two months after that, he had another seizure, so his doctor said to take four pills at bedtime. Two months after that, he had another seizure, so now he takes five pills and if he has another seizure, he will take six. I wanted to know if anyone else takes just keppra without any additional medication and how long does it take to see if it works? His seizures do seem to be a little bit milder, but they're still pretty bad. I'm beginning to think that he needs to try something else.
