[fast5] Re: back again

Hi Mary-

I'm really impressed that you stuck with it for 60 days after only losing a pound or two. Great job! I agree, it is such a liberating way of eating.

I have to ask, when you say "basically low carb", what does that mean? What would an average day of eating be for you?

What I've been reading lately is that your fat cells can be either energy storage or energy supplies. When insulin is high, your fat cells become storage only. When insulin is low, they become primarily energy supplies. To try to make this simple, if you're not losing weight, there is likely a hormone or chemical that is circulating in your blood that has turned your fat cells into storage only facilities. The usual culprits are high insulin and high cortisol, low testosterone and high estrogen. These are "usually" (but not always) caused by carbohydrates, alcohol, caffeine, and high levels of emotional stress. What you can do is look at your diet and make sure that you are eating as few carbs as possible and you cut out caffeine, alcohol, and emotional stress. Easier said than done, right? :) I recently went for two months without eating ANY carbs (not even greens) and felt great. Though I don't recommend that for everybody, it just shows the extremes that your body can function well within.

I HIGHLY recommend Gary Taubes' new book "Why we Get Fat". It explains the chemical processes that make us hold onto energy and store it as fat. It's a quick read and has lots of "AHA!" moments.
