This is one of those questions that is very difficult to answer. The
thing is, most people who do Fast-5, or other types of Intermittent
Fasting, do in fact eat less (even though they might pig out more at
first). So when they get good results, people say "Well, it's not the
IF that is doing it, it's just that you are eating less". Which is
likely true: in studies where they force people to eat the same amount
of food in a smaller window, there is less benefit. Also, people who
do Fast-5 seem to start eating healthier food, which further skews the
results.
But here is the deal: to do CRON is a lot of work. People have done it
in studies and it worked well, but the studies and articles all stress
how hard it was to get people to do it, and how careful they had to be
about what they ate, measuring each portion, sticking to low calorie
foods. Doing it long-term seems impossible for most (unless you are a
lab rat and have no choice!).
But with Fast-5, most people just don't worry about the calories, or
what they eat, and they lose weight and feel better anyway. If you
look at the archives, you'll see that a number of people start
changing their food choices, or eating greens/proteins first. Or they
combine Fast-5 with other food plans or food restrictions. Mostly
though, you'll be surprised at how little appetite you get after the
first week or two.

==========
One of the reasons I've been doing this isn't so much to lose weight
as that I found out that this way of eating solved a lot of my
digestive issues. My gut is pretty messed up, probably due to 30+
years of undiagnosed Celiac. It was getting so I could digest less and
less: fats made me nauseous.
For some reason though, eating one big meal worked. I suspect that the
19 hours gives your system time to store up enzymes and digestive
juices in your gall bladder etc, so when the food comes there is
plenty. Also there is time to do "housecleaning" in the gut and the
bacteria/yeast probably die back some.
I did have some problem on an *empty* stomach though, esp. with
medications, and then when I got ulcers (I probably already had them,
but I got diagnosed finally). What has worked for that is taking
konjac/psyllium/
and is pretty much calorie-less, but it appears to kill H.Pylori and
it gives some "cushioning" to medications that need to be taken with
food.
Don't think you are suddenly going to pig out though. My meals are
way, way smaller than they used to be, albeit more enjoyable.
