Prince Stunned By 'Respectable' French Fans

Pop superstar Prince was left stunned during a recent concert in Paris, France - when fans agreed to honor his request not to use camera phones to record his show.

The "Purple Rain" hitmaker insists on restricting the use of cameras at his gigs because he hates seeing poor quality footage of his performances online - but he never expected French fans to honor his request.

He admits he was pleasantly surprised not to see the glow of a camera phone during his concert at the Grand Palais on Sunday - and he thinks Americans could learn a lot from the politeness of their French counterparts.

He says, "It is actually indescribable, that much love. They were very respectable.

"We asked that no one used camera phones and they honored that request, unlike Americans who are so obsessed with technology.

"We don't like to have our concert filmed that way because it sounds so bad and then you give all the footage to somebody like YouTube."

Pop superstar Prince has spoken out for the first time about his battle with epilepsy, crediting the seizure disorder with inspiring his eccentric musical persona.

On PBS' "Tavis Smiley," he says, "I've never spoken about this before but I was born epileptic. I used to have seizures when I was young. My mother and father didn't know what to do or how to handle it but they did the best they could with what little they had."

The pop star began picking up instruments as a means to escape his painful struggle, and credits a divine intervention with helping him get over the illness.

He adds, "Early in my career I tried to compensate by being as flashy as I could and as noisy as I could. ... My mother told me one day I walked in to her and said, 'Mom, I'm not going to be sick anymore,' and she said 'Why?' and I said 'Because an angel told me so.' Now, I don't remember saying it, that's just what she told me."

Prince Dedicates Midnight Show to Oscar Winner Cruz

Pop superstar Prince ditched his post-Oscars bash at his Hollywood Hills home for a show at Hollywood's Avalon Ballroom.

Fans and famous friends paid $100-a-head to join the "Purple Rain" hitmaker at his Sunday midnight party, which doubled as the launch for his new Web site LotusFlow3r. com.

Prince dedicated his two-hour set to Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz and performed a string of hits and covers from upcoming releases, including The Cars "Let's Go" and "Crimson and Clover," a chart-topper for Tommy James and the Shondells.
Oscars attendees Alicia Keys and Queen Latifah and nominee Taraji P. Henson were among the audience.

Announcing, "I'm the DJ tonight," Prince also played covers of the Beatles' "Come Together" and the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" as well as chart classics "Jungle Love" and "Play That Funky Music."

He ended the show with an encore of "I Feel For You" at almost 3:30 a.m.

Prince's Door-To-Door Preaching Shocks Fans

Religious rocker Prince is often chased through the streets by his fans, as he tries to convert them to the Bible.

The "Sexy M.F." singer, who became a Jehovah's Witness in 2001, goes house-to-house to preach about the faith.

And fans are sometimes so stunned to find the rock legend on their doorstep that they don't want to let him go.

He tells USA Today newspaper, "Sometimes fans freak out. It might be a shock to see me, but that's no reason for people to act crazy, and it doesn't give them licence to chase me down the street."

Prince is so devoted to his faith that he even takes the Bible to business meetings, to show executives he is serious about doing a deal.

He adds: "There are all kinds of possible deals artists aren't privy to. I love to bring the Bible to the table. I start by asking if they believe in God, then: 'What kind of business do you want to conduct: Transparent or hide the ball?' I'll do tours and albums if the deal is clean."

Superstar Prince reportedly will be paid $4 million to perform at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

The singer will headline Saturday night at the three-day music event in California, which begins on April 25.

But he was only added to the festival line-up in a bid to increase ticket sales, according to PerezHilton. com.

A source tells the Web site, "Prince was a late addition to the line-up. The promoters added him to try and sell more tickets and make up for a less than stellar, in comparison to years past, roster of performers.

"The exact amount Prince is getting paid for his Coachella performance is $4.8 million."

Prince Promoters Join Internet Row

Prince's promoter AEG has joined the row over the use of the singer's image, accusing the unofficial fansites of "false representation. "

The "Purple Rain" hitmaker came under fire earlier this week, after his representatives demanded three Web sites remove any unauthorized pictures of the star, citing copyright infringement.
The fansites hit back at the threat of legal papers and vowed to fight the case on behalf of the superstar's millions of fans worldwide.

But AEG -- working on behalf on Prince -- claim the Web sites involved are misrepresenting the artist's fans -- because many supporters have logged on to the official site to praise the move.
A statement from AEG reads, "Prince is not suing his fans, is not looking to penalize fans and nor is he looking to or inhibiting freedom of speech in any way.

"The action taken earlier this week was not to shut down fansites, or control comment. The issue was simply to do with in regards to copyright and no lawsuits have been filed.
"The three sites in question have falsely positioned themselves as representatives of millions of Prince fans. In fact, many have come out in support of Prince at his official site and even on the message boards of the unofficial sites in question."

Prince Image Ban Story Was 'Exaggerated'

A company working on behalf of Prince has accused fans of exaggerating a story that claims the singer has ordered them to remove any image that bears his likeness from their Web sites.

The singer's record company has hired Internet monitoring company Web Sheriff to protect the star from Internet copyright infringement -- and they insist the fan sites have made the situation sound a lot worse than it actually is.

The pop superstar angered many of his supporters after he was reported to have slapped an image ban on several high profile fan Web sites forbidding them to use any unauthorized pictures of him.

The outraged Web sites joined forces to form Prince Fans United in protest and have vowed to fight any legal action.
But Web Sheriff insist Prince himself has nothing to do with the lawsuit threat -- it is the work of record label.

Web Sheriff's managing director, John Giacobbi, says, "At no time is Prince suing his fans and this is not about freedom of speech.

"The current issue is one between Prince's record label and three unofficial Web sites and relates to the use of Prince trademarks and photographs, many of which are Prince's copyright."

Prince has ordered several fan Web sites to remove any image that bears his likeness.

Internet sites HouseQuake.com, PrinceFams.com and Prince.org have been asked by the pop superstar's lawyers to comply with their demands immediately.

The outraged Web sites, who stand accused of copyright infringement, have now joined forces to form Prince Fans United in protest.

A statement on PrinceFansUnited. com reads: "It is our opinion that these threats are not made in an attempt to enforce valid copyright as Prince alleges in his threats, rather we believe they are attempts to stifle all critical commentary about Prince.
"We strongly believe that such actions are in violation of the freedom of speech and should not be allowed. Prince claims that fansites are not allowed to present any artwork with Prince's likeness, to the extreme that he has demanded the removal of fans' own photographs of their Prince-inspired tattoos and their vehicles displaying Prince-inspired license plates."

Prince Sued for $1 Million

Reuters / Gary Hershorn, 2004

Pop superstar Prince has been named in a $1 million lawsuit after allegedly failing to pay computer goods worth $12,000.
Ian Lewis filed the lawsuit at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, claiming the "Purple Rain" hitmaker breached a contract by taking "several hard drives used for video production" and not paying for them.

He further claims the singer returned a loaned $25,000 computer "in a broken and un-fixable condition."

Lewis is seeking $1 million damages.

A spokesman for Prince was unavailable for comment.
