[epilepsy] Re: Prolactin levels-women

Good morning Julie B.

I, myself, do not have Epilepsy - I joined this group because my husband of 10-years has the condition. I found your question very interesting.

Because I love my husband dearly, I learned all about Epilepsy in the early years of our marriage. He has partial tonic-clonic seizures, but
they are controlled quite well with Topamax (brand); Tegretol, and a very small dosage of phenobarbitol.

Elevated prolactin levels have been discovered in women with Epilepsy.
They are usually about twice the normal levels. What's normal? Well, I had my prolactin levels checked several years ago and they were
very elevated - not due to Epilepsy, but to my erratic menstrual cycle.
My endocronologist said normal levels are between 12 and 25 --- however
my were off the chart at like.. 200 or 220 - the doctor prescribed a
medication, I took it and they normalized.

More to the point of YOUR question - there is breast leakage when you
have elevated prolactin levels - but the leakage is usually clear.. or
slighly "foggy" looking. I would GUESS--- again, I use the word GUESS
because I am by NO MEANS a doctor - but I would guess the green would
be caused by any seizure medication you may be on.

Prolactin levels are usually elevated or caused by pituitary tumors;
or if your pregnant or breastfeeding, Hypothyroidism; or certain drugs
such as haloperidol - a drug for behavior disorders.

I hope that helps just a bit.

Are sz more common a week before the the menstral cycle? I have noticed a green waxy like breast leakage and was wondering if it might be related to prolactin levels or the meds. Any input?
