Medium Chain Triglycerides. They are a fraction of coconut
oil, and used for feeding people with digestive issues. Body
builders use them for losing fat though, while protecting muscle
mass. MCT tends to rev up the metabolism ... they raise my
body temp up to more normal like 98.6. I use coconut oil for the
rest of my family ... there is a fair bit of MCT in coconut oil, but
it never raised my body temps up like MCT does.
The body builders will replace dietary fat with MCT ... you can say,
fry a tortilla in it, or an egg, or make stir-fry. They also sometimes
use it instead of carbs. It feeds the cells directly, like glucose I
guess.
You should only use maybe a tablespoon or two with a meal
though, and start slow. It is absorbed very quickly from the
stomach, to the point it can cause stomach cramps. It's safe
though ... there is a fair bit of MCT in breastmilk. It smokes at
a lower temp than most oils, so you need to cook gently with
it.
MCT doesn't supply any essential fatty acids though, so
body builders, who are on a pretty extreme diet, will also
supplement with something like fish oil or borage. Me, I love
whole fish (esp. salmon bellies) and chicken with the skin,
so I'm not in any danger. I use a bit of sesame oil in cooking
too, because it adds a nice flavor and it has good oils in it.
It's cheapest at JEdwards, where it's like $25 a gallon.
