HI,
You could look into things under sensory integration. People can have
problems with craving or avoiding different sensations and how to regulate
this. There are great books on it, one is the Out of Sync Child. Don't be
put off by the child title, it is the same concept. Another is How Does
Your Engine Run. Basically we all have things our body craves or avoids.
They are related to the senses, sounds, smells, vestibular ( balance), deep
pressure, taste, ect. You can have a mix as in craving ( being hypo,
wanting more) in one area and avoiding ( being hyper) in another. This is
something discussed in autistic children but the funny thing to me is that it is
something adults have done for years but not had a name for it. Know
anyone who chews on pens or ice? Know anyone who likes rocking chairs? How
about a back massager but just likes the feel of it not so much for bad back?
Or they like heavy quilts on their beds for the feel of it? Jumping on a
small trampoline?
That would be a sensory integration issue.
Scratching and bleeding would probably respond well to brushing. Get
either a soft brush like doctors use to scrub for surgery or a brush to clean
vegetable. You want it soft like a nail cleaning brush. There is a
technique called brushing and deep joint pressure that many people respond to. I
did it with 2 of my kids. It greatly helped one. You do the brushing and
apply just enough pressure for the bristles to slightly bend. Then you
compress the joints, pushing the bones on both sides of the joint to the joint
not too hard. You try to do it about every 2 hours, if memory serves.
The name of the technique is 2 last names.
My kids are older but I have seen over the years that products that were
first introduced by Occupational therapists for kids for sensory integration
are now frequently available in office supply stores like Staples or other
places Bed Bath and Beyond for people to have at their desks at work or in
their homes to relax. It is the same concept.
