All empileptics are magnesium deficient. I was diagnosed with epilepsy as a child and Petite Mal seizures from the brain stem. Then years later I developed Grand Mal seizures and temporal lobe seizures. I took anticonvulsants for 49 years - this is all documened as I had an EEG every year or 2 without fail.
I have not taken any anticonvulsants nor medication since Oct 3, 2007. I have not had any seizures. For over 2 years I used transdermal magnesium chhloride every day and got my magnesium levels up and stopped having seizures. I had advanced gingivitis from taking Dilantin and the dentists all wanted to take all my teeth out as they said they were all loose and my gums were bleeding badly and were infected. I used transdermal magnesium on my gums after I got my magnesium levels up and I still have all my teeth and my gums do not bleed anymore nor are the gums puffy and red.
There are many studies in PubMed about magnesium and at www.mg.water.
Magnesium in Neurological Diseases and Emotions
Even a mild deficiency of magnesium can cause increased sensitivity to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, and insomnia. Imagine being able to clear these symptoms without dangerous drugs! Magnesium is the premier medicine for depression, sleep disturbances, emotionally disturbed behavior, and neurological diseases because of its strong positive effect in calming and nourishing the nervous system.
The healthy cell is permeable. This means that nutrients are able to pass into them efficiently to be absorbed and the toxic byproducts of metabolism are eliminated. When the cells are healthy the polarity of the cell is correct, i.e., there is intracellular potassium and magnesium as well as extracellular sodium and calcium. The cell in this state is healthy, and the person functions optimally both physically and emotionally. The unhealthy cell is not permeable. This leads to unhealthy cells with sodium and calcium going inside the cell, and magnesium and potassium being lost. 28 References.

This is not a new breakthrew or anything - this has been known about magnesium for about 40 years or more. But Medical doctors only have one hour of learning in nutrition at most [unless they are orthomolecular doctor who go on to train in nutrition too] so unless they are very intelligent and/or caring they don't bother to learn more then what they are taught at medical school.

MAGNESIUM & SEIZURES - If in doubt.

I didn't stop taking my medications suddenly at all - it took me almost 3 years of using transdermal magnesium everyday to stop all my medications. But this cannot be done using only or even mainly oral magnesium - oral magnesium is not absorbed very well at all. But transdermal magnesium is easy to use and not as expensive as IV or injections.
Good luck. It is nice not to have to take drugs nor to have seizures and to be able to ride my bike etc.

> This is my first post so I would really appreciate some fedback. I take relatively small doses of four kinds of seizure meds 300 mg of lamictal, 500 mg of depakote, 1.5 mg of clonazapam and 64 mg of phenobarb. My seizures are almost completely controlled.

> Family members and friends always suggest herbal remedies to me in general terms e.g...."..you should look into alternative medicine" no specifics. ever. Anyway, I have researched this and found that there are no herbal remedies/alternate medicine that can replace traditional meds. I know that they can supplement them but has anybody heard of any alternative medicines that can replace traditional meds entirely.
