Re: [epilepsy] Re: Question re working

For 5 years I suffered from intractable, severe, multiple daily, complex partial seizures.  After they were determined to be intractable and no medication combination would work I had surgery.  I am now nearly 6 years seizure free.

As far as disclosure is concerned there are two ways to approach this.  If he will require any reasonable accommodations to perform the job duties those must be asked for before he is hired.  It is typically a good idea to disclose it at some point in the process, but is not required, and it is in fact illegal for an employer to discriminate in hiring him because of it.  Disclosing it means you can educate them about the condition and how to react, and not react, when a seizure happens.

There are seizure alert dogs that are specifically trained to alert a person before a seizure happens. This allows the person to sit or lie down, put down things they might be holding, or stop the activity they are involved in.  I do not know the cost but I do know that there are people on this list that do know.

The seizures are complex partials, but generalize to tonic clinic seizures about once a week.

Did you choose to disclose this medical issue to a potential employer, or was it something that was mentioned only after you had been working.

Aren't service dogs about $20,000. That's what I was told by the service agency that I contacted. And I was told that a dog might not detect a seizure in advance, but would keep him safe during and after the seizure.
