[epilepsy] Re: Ho Everyone

Megan drives and has memory problems. It's not like you're going to forget how to park by the time you get somewhere :) Seriously, I have a poor memory and sometimes it amazes me how much she forgets details of a recent event, conversations, etc. She has trouble with recall for tests, too, but is gradually finishing her bachelor's degree. She takes depakote and topiramate (generic Topomax). She has taken lamictal in the past, but it failed to control her seizures.

What do you mean by HS? High School? An intelligence test doesn't really test short term recall. It tests problem solving, the ability to recognize patterns, vocabulary, that kind of thing. Unless you are losing memory of things you once knew, or can no longer figure out solutions to puzzles, for example, you would be fine. It's not a recall of facts you might have learned, either. And everyone passes an IQ test, they just have different scores that refer back to a normative group. Put another way, your score just shows where you fall on a bell curve in terms of mental functioning, from what we would term mentally challenged, to average, to what we call genius. Most people fall in the middle. It's designed that way. In fact, they re-norm the tests periodically and recalibrate so that the average score will always stay at 100.

I just checked New Jersey laws about driving with epilepsy, and I question whether the doctor can even make an IQ test a requirement before clearing you to drive. The only requirement seems to be that you are one year seizure-free when you apply for your license. That said, you shouldn't worry about taking an IQ test. This is the summary of the laws on the Epilepsy Foundation's website:

My best wishes to you,
