Good Post!
I have epilepsy and my son has Asperger's. My son is currently in college and working toward getting a Ph.d in philosophy. He is mainstream as much as possible and expects to live and work independently as an adult.
I never disclosed my epilepsy and ended up getting fired when it got out of control. I have taught my son that Asperger's isn't a disability; it's a difference. As a parent you need to decide what route you want your son to take. It sounds like a desk job may be a better choice for him as opposed to glue and hammer tasks designed for low functioning autistic people.
